Knightsbridge Underground station, one of London’s busiest, just got a major facelift — and a piece of its hidden past has been brought back to life.
For the first time in almost a century, sections of the station that were sealed off in the 1930s are once again open to the public.

The transformation comes thanks to a collaboration between Transport for London (TfL) and Knightsbridge Estate developers, Chelsfield. Together, they have not only restored beautiful architectural features but also modernized key parts of the site to meet today’s needs.

The highlight? A brand-new, step-free entrance on Hooper’s Court.
Equipped with three large lifts, this entrance provides easy, street-to-platform access directly to the Piccadilly line — a game changer for those with mobility needs, parents with strollers, and travelers with heavy luggage. It’s another step towards making London’s iconic transport system more accessible for everyone.

At the grand opening, Mayor Sadiq Khan shared:
“I am committed to making our transport network fairer and more accessible for all Londoners. This upgrade at Knightsbridge brings us closer to achieving 50% step-free Tube stations by 2030.”

Knightsbridge station welcomes over 13 million passengers every year, drawn by nearby shopping hotspots like Harrods and Harvey Nichols. With the new improvements, navigating the area has just become easier for millions of visitors and Londoners alike.

This latest upgrade makes Knightsbridge the 93rd step-free station on the Underground network. TfL reminds passengers who don’t require lift access to continue using the main Brompton Road entrance — ensuring the lifts stay available for those who truly need them.

James Small-Edwards, London Assembly Member for West Central, added:
“The Tube must work for everyone. Expanding step-free access is crucial for creating a truly accessible city for residents and visitors from around the world.”
