Winter storm “Goretti” approaches the UK – snow, ice and strong winds expected

Winter is tightening its grip on the United Kingdom and shows no sign of easing. After several days of snowfall and sub-zero temperatures, the country is now bracing for the first named storm of the year – “Goretti”, which has already triggered new weather warnings for snow and icy conditions across large parts of the nation. Meteorologists warn that the situation will deteriorate over the coming days, with England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all expected to be affected.

On Tuesday evening and throughout Wednesday, a yellow weather warning was issued for almost the entire UK, while more severe snow warnings are expected for Thursday and Friday. The cold spell has already brought the lowest temperature recorded so far this winter – a freezing -12.5°C in Marham, Norfolk. The severe weather has not only disrupted daily life but has also led to serious consequences. Hundreds of schools have closed – more than 380 in Wales, at least 300 in Scotland, 203 in Northern Ireland and over 230 in England. Rail passengers also faced major disruption, with delays and cancellations across multiple routes, while widespread icy conditions have made travel hazardous.

Snowfall continues in Scotland and has even reached Central London – something that rarely happens. All of this is only a prelude to the harsher conditions expected from storm “Goretti”. Forecasts suggest the storm will arrive from the southwest on Thursday, bringing heavy rain that is likely to turn into snow as temperatures fall. Along coastal areas, winds are expected to exceed 110 km/h, increasing the risk of power outages and further travel disruption.

Meteorologists advise the public to monitor forecasts closely and travel only if necessary. This winter clearly has no intention of loosening its hold, and “Goretti” may make the start of January even more challenging for residents across the United Kingdom.
