Fake TfL Inspectors Stealing Money from Contactless Cards – A New Scam Hits London Transport

A new and disturbing scam is spreading across London’s public transport system – and it targets honest commuters using contactless bank cards or mobile payment apps to travel.

Scammers, dressed as legitimate TfL inspectors, are boarding buses and trains pretending to conduct routine fare checks. They carry fake ID badges, wear high-vis vests, and use handheld devices that look like real TfL card readers. But instead of checking your payment, these devices are set up to steal money directly from your bank account.

Several eyewitnesses and TikTok users have reported seeing people unknowingly tapping their debit cards, credit cards or phones on these fake devices – only to discover later that £10 to £50 had been instantly deducted. These transactions often go unnoticed at first because contactless payments don’t require PINs or confirmation.

Importantly, those using TfL’s Oyster cards are not affected, as these cards are pre-loaded and not linked to bank accounts. That’s why scammers specifically target passengers who use their personal bank cards or smartphones to pay for travel.

TfL has reminded the public that real inspectors always carry official ID badges with a unique number, and they never ask passengers to tap their cards onto a handheld device. If someone insists you “tap to check” – they’re not inspecting, they’re stealing.

What You Should Do:

  • Never tap your card on a device unless it’s an official TfL reader at the station gate or on the bus.
  • Ask to see ID if someone claims to be a TfL inspector.
  • Report any suspicious encounters immediately to TfL or the police.

In London, caution is not paranoia – it’s common sense. This city moves fast, and so do the scams. Stay sharp.
